Our family experience with Covid-19: First Week of E-Learning

By Macaroni Kid South Hill-Puyallup, Sasha L March 24, 2020

We will look back at this month, this year with a variety of different emotions, but what I vowed to myself is to cut myself a bit of slack. As my daily routine drastically changed I will be forever grateful for my loved ones.  My family and I (along with every other family in the world) have been turned upside down and instructed to alter their routine to save lives, and that is the most important purpose!  When we received news my child’s school was going to close for the near future, it provided caution yet surged us into the unknown!

Immediately after reading the email I realized 'educator' was added to my large list of roles that I play to ensure the happiness and success of my children.  I don’t know about you, but I am planner;  I have lists, upon lists, upon lists, so I had to prepare for the unknown whatever that may be.  Luckily for myself, this is not uncharted territory!  I have always appreciated the choice, the choice of either having your child in a conventional school or at home.  Having that in mind, I took the news of my child’s school closing very seriously because I wanted to maintain his scholastic success while enjoying the extra time with him.  I, like so many other parents, researched and joined parent groups for Covid-19, but I found myself quickly overwhelmed with the amount of information that was being thrown at us.  It's not that I didn’t appreciate the information here or there, it was a simple reaction to my new role and the responsibility that it held.  When I said I had to cut myself some slack…… this is what I meant! I had to step away, collect my thoughts, and decide what is best for us for this experience. Therefore, I decided right then and there that while we work on scholastic we are going to include: baking, building, creating and gardening, and many more aspects of life in the lesson plan.  While we try to maintain a schedule, it is tentative to change for whatever reason!  I have to remember this is about my child, who can hopefully grow from this experience and walk away stronger, wiser, happier.

While it may be overwhelming, it may seem like the day will never end, just remember to breathe and reboot! We are all in this together, and let’s leave a positive memory on our little ones amygdala.  Now bring on week two of e-learning!

Best wishes,

Sasha
